Are Natural Hair Care Products Better?
Product Ingredient Information, Informational Articles No Comments »With the trend toward more and more African-American going natural, comes the question “Are natural hair care products better?” It would seem to follow that natural black hair care would be better done with natural black hair products.
Whether natural black hair care products are better or not is certainly open for debate. While it’s obvious that the cheap filler-laden products that line the shelves of many grocery and drug stores are ineffective and sometimes harmful, natural black hair care products are almost always more expensive and may or may not be appealing to customers who have become used to products that are chemically produced.
Our beauty products today are created with artificial colors. Many of us may be a little put off by a clear shampoo. They have artificial fragrances. Some will miss the “fresh” or sweet scent of store brand shampoos when they switch to an unscented products. But, beyond the sight and smell of the natural products, they will sometimes perform a little differently. A natural shampoo might not lather as much as a shampoo containing sodium laurel sulfate or other foaming agents. A natural shampoo might be more thin than one containing thickening agents. So, while the shampoo will be just as effective at cleaning, the perception may be that it’s “watery” and “doesn’t lather up”. Natural products may separate or get cloudy. And, the shelf life of products that aren’t preserved with things like parabens may be shorter.
Using natural hair care products is often a trade off. But, it is one that more people are making. And, manufacturers are taking notice.
Why Use Preservatives in Natural Products?
People have asked us what our opinion is on hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is a fairly controversial ingredient used in many skin lightening creams and gels. Hydroquinone is highly effective, which is why it’s used so commonly. It has been established as probably the most effective treatment for hyperpigmentation; although other treatments are coming along and we offer alternatives on our website.
